In geotechnical engineering it is often important to take into account construction path, constitutive modelling and three-dimensional effects. In such cases the use of the most complicated form of analysis may not be feasible and it is necessary to adopt simpler approaches which recognise the most important geotechnical aspects of the situation. © 1988.
