Abstract

An analysis of sulfate washout data collected near a coal fired generating station is performed. It is shown that sulfate aerosol scavenging cannot account for the washout pattern observed Known characteristics strongly suggest that SO2 scavenging by rain is the primary washout mechanism. An empirical expression for the SO2 washout coefficient based upon knowledge of SO2 scavenging is developed and used as an aid in analyzing the data. © 1974.
