Abstract

Abaca is one of the most important commercial plants of the Philippines known in the world as Manila hemp and is recognized as the best fiber for cordage. It has established itself as an excellent material for the manufacture of specialty paper. The leaves and leafsheaths are also used for roofing materials for houses and sheds and as wrapping material in some parts of the country where the crop abounds. The fiber obtained or extracted from the leafsheaths is used for the manufacture of cordage, twines, shoes, bags, slippers, fishnets, burlap, surgical appliance, sinamay, mosquito nets and other commercial items. Experiments on abaca are still being carried out to find other posible commercial uses.
