Abstract
Genetic factors are important in determining individual susceptibility to allergic disease. At the same time, the early environment plays a critical role in shaping early development, and modifying risk through effects on both the immune system and developing organ systems. Understanding how inherited genetic factors contribute to individual susceptibility, severity and response to treatment in allergic disease together with the role of intrauterine and early life dysregulation of immune system and organ development in the inception of allergic disease, is essential in identifying at-risk individuals and possible therapeutic interventions for the primary prevention of allergic disease.
