Abstract

This chapter focuses on the role of a project manager and the interaction of this role with all of the stages identified throughout a civil engineering project. To ensure the successful construction of a scheme, the whole project requires close but efficient project management. It is imperative that an idea and understanding of the construction techniques being considered is appreciated by the project management and design teams. Knowledge is unlimited and the site investigation is required at an early stage to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies. To construct a pipeline using microtunneling, for instance, recognition of the location required for working shafts and reception pits must be established. Similarly, directional drilling may require a lead-in trench to allow the pipe material to reach the required depth without inducing excessive stress/strain within the pipe walls. It is also essential to know the capabilities of each technique that is being considered during a project, for example, how far a microtunnel can be efficiently driven in differing ground conditions. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
