Abstract

A review of the work carried out by us so far in this field has been presented. The spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton pigment (with optimized and non optimized sensors) in relation to physical oceanographic parameters (satellite and climatological data) has been discussed and the need for region and season specific relationship between different parameters has been emphasized, which can provide input for bio-physical coupled models. This will lead to understanding and quantifying the processes that contribute to the spatial and temporal development of nutrient and plankton distributions. It is concluded that various oceanographic processes and their application can be studied using remote sensing techniques like algal bloom dynamics, use of sea surface temperature (SST) in forecasting fishery potential areas besides interrelationship between temperature profile, wind and mixed layer depth towards developing biophysical models which are region and season specific.
