Discipline summary

Engineering is the study and application of scientific, mathematical, economic and social principles to build and operate structures, machines, devices, systems and processes. Engineering is an exercise in creative design that seeks to enhance people’s lives by making materials, energy and other resources available through nature more productive and useful. It requires a technical understanding of how things function, so as to predict behavior and make improvements going forward. Engineering is simultaneously considered an art form, an academic discipline and a technical profession and it requires expertise in a broad range of expressive media, academic disciplines and practical fields.

  1. This bestselling book in the field provides a complete introduction to the physical origins of heat and mass transfer. Noted for its crystal clear presentation and easy-to-follow problem solving methodology, Incropera and Dewitt's systematic…
  2. The present paper deals with the two-dimensional numerical simulation of gaseous flow and heat transfer in planar microchannel and nanochannel with different wall temperatures in transitional regime 0.1Kn1 . An atomistic molecular simulation method…
  3. Dental thermal pain is a significant health problem in daily life and dentistry. There is a long-standing question regarding the phenomenon that cold stimulation evokes sharper and more shooting pain sensations than hot stimulation. This phenomenon,…
  4. Continued use of petroleum sourced fuels is now widely recognized as unsustainable because of depleting supplies and the contribution of these fuels to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the environment. Renewable, carbon neutral, transport fuels…
  5. We are developing a dual panel breast-dedicated PET system using LSO scintillators coupled to position sensitive avalanche photodiodes (PSAPD). The charge output is amplified and read using NOVA RENA-3 ASICs. This paper shows that the coincidence…
  6. Soft lithography represents a non-photolithographic strategy based on self-assembly and replica molding for carrying out micro- and nanofabrication. It provides a convenient, effective, and low-cost method for the formation and manufacturing of…
  7. In 1999, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry committed to major restructuring of its undergraduate medical school curriculum. A distinguishing feature of this reform was the planned emphasis on and integration of several…
  8. In 1960, R.E. Kalman published his famous paper describing a recursive solution to the discrete-data linear filtering problem. Since that time, due in large part to advances in digital computing, the Kalman filter has been the subject of extensive…
  9. The large number of hazardous chemicals manufactured, transported, and stored in the United States creates the potential for significant toxic exposures to workers in industry today. Emergency physicians are likely to be called upon to evaluate many…
