Abstract
Modern students approaching hadith texts will usually begin with a set of books collectively known as “the six books of hadith.” This chapter surveys the activities of organizing and collecting hadith reports that culminated with the six books. After a brief survey of the manner in which the hadith literature developed from the first century to the second, the chapter introduces these six books, their manner of organization and their content.
