Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to suggest that the explanation of how we can know certain principles to be valid is that those principles are based upon statements that are analytic. it is then shown that with respect to the principle 'in general one ought not to steal' this is in fact the case. the claim raises a number of problems. some of these problems are then dealt with.
