Abstract
Progress in design tools for integrated optics and optoelectronics is reviewed from an applications perspective. The need for software design tools in this field is demonstrated. The building blocks required to provide a design path from concept to manufacture are described and a practical example is given to show the route from design to delivery. Finally, the key interface requirements are explored and some suggestions are offered on the way ahead for optoelectronic design.
