Computerizing materiel management systems

Abstract

After setting out inventory accounting issues the article focusses on a system developed at one university hospital. The configuration consists of an integrated microcomputer network that allows for inventory control at central supply and pharmacy, as well as at each department, by stationing microcomputers in the departments. The system has produced an effective operational review of the material management function. The future outcome of the review should be a set of recommended quantifiable improvements to be achieved over a 12 month period. Ongoing performance monitoring at the department level has helped establish internal targets for improvement and will eventually include material and paper flow analysis, productivity analysis, performance ratios, and a meterial-cost analysis.
