Abstract

During the past several years, many changes have occurred in the lighting industry. These changes include increased emphasis on energy conservation and on improving equivalent spherical illuminance (ESI), visual comfort probability (VCP), and the light effectiveness factor (LEF). The problem that faces the designer is to recognise the advantages and shortcomings of the many lighting systems. For example, it is easy to have high ESI or VCP but not necessarily both. The responsibility of the designer is to have a reasonable level of each. Modifications of existing systems; use of radial batwing lenses; recessed, large cell, parabolic louver fluorescent; perimeter indirect fluorescent lighting in school classrooms are discussed.
