Abstract
The article discusses the British Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) funding of data centers that are responsible for the long-term management of its environmental data holdings. It addresses the goal of ensuring that archived data sets are first-class scientific objects and that data curation is done effectively. NERC's establishment of the Science Information Strategy (SIS) system for working more effectively with scientific communities in data delivery is cited.
