Abstract

In the year 1963 the State President of the Republic of South Africa appointed a Commission of Inquiry into the alleged threat to animal and plant life in St. Lucia Lake. The Commission, over the years 1964 to 1966, organised a number of special investigations which, was published in photolitho form in 1967 and set before Parliament. This paper is not quite the same as the report submitted to the Commission of Inquiry; parts have been re-written with a different bias and a complete check-list of the fauna has been added with notes on habitats, salinity tolerances, etc. The paper deals essentially with the findings of the 1964/65 expeditions, but comparisons are made with earlier expeditions and with other estuaries.
