Abstract
Problem-solving methods (PSM) are recognized as valuable components for constructing knowledge-based systems (KBS). These methods describe the reasoning-process of a KBS in an implementation- and domain-independent manner. An analysis of several first-generation expert systems for solving different tasks is given. Though these systems are realized using different representation formalisms, they appear to exhibit common problem-solving behavior.
