Abstract
The report summaries the current state-of-play of the Tematic Network ELOISE (European Land-Ocean Interaction Studies) in FP4 and FP5 programme. It describes the planning and execution since its inception in 1994, its objectives, its management and organisation. Currently ELOISE comprises 27 shared-cost and 2 concerted action projects. ELOISE aims at developing a coherent European coastal zone research network of high scientific value and relevance to human society. Specific research objectives are: 1. Significane of coastal seas in global change -Focus 1, The carbon cycle in the coastal zone -Focus 2, Nutrient and elemtal cycles in the coastal environment -Focus 3, Fluxes of biogases from the coastal ocean that contribute to climatological change 2. Human impact on coastal seas -Focus 1, Historical records of past changes in land-ocean interactions -Focus 2, Interactions between pollution, eutrohication and physical disturbance -Focus 3, The biology of global change in the coastal hzone -Focus 4, Human impact through changing land-use and economic development -Focus 5, Direct effects of human activities in the coastal seas 3. Socio-economic development and coasl seas -Focus 1, Interfacing natural and socio-econmoic siences -Focus 2, Management of coastal hone resources -Focus 3, Critical analysis of outcomes of past coastal zhone mangement projects 4. Methodology and implementation of ELOISE -To determine which methodology and instrumentaion is needed -Promoting the development of a European scientific infrastructure for research and data management -Development of mathematical models aimed at prediction and upscaling
