Abstract

The laboratory examination of fibers in a forensic context is not a series of unrelated analytical examinations but is rather a holistic examination of fibers as part of a criminalistics approach to fiber examination. This article covers the interface from recovery of fibers at a scene, case management and selection of fibers for more detailed examination. A protocol is described and then each phase of the examination process and instrumentation considered. Emphasis is placed on the central role of microscopic examination in this process.
