Abstract
A formal model of a knowledge base system consisting of a domain knowledge base and a user knowledge base in intelligent tutoring systems is presented in this paper. The domain knowledge base is represented by 3-level structure: subject level, knowledge concept level and learning material level; and ontologies are introduced in order to improve the sharing and reusing of multimedia teaching materials. The user knowledge base is constructed by making use of learners' knowledge levels, psychological characteristics and learning styles, etc., to improve the self-adaptability and pedagogical effects of the system. After given the formalisms of the above two kinds of knowledge bases, the formal model of our knowledge base system is presented, and the teaching process based on the system is discussed in detail to show that the model is practicable. ©2009 IEEE.
