Abstract
To address their frustrations with commercial software for online course development, a group of universities have banded together to design a free course-management system whose source code will be placed into the public domain. Known as the Open Knowledge Initiative (http://web.mit.edu/oki), the project is being spearheaded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University along with a handful of other universities, namely Dartmouth College, North Carolina State University and the Universities of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
