Abstract
For a muffin‐tin potential a multiple scattering problem where all scatterers act only aS black‐box entities is separated in general form from those relations which yield the wave field within a, given muffin‐tin sphere. This separation renders possible the construction of the Green function. In comparison with other formulations the role of the fields incident at the individual scatterers is emphasized. In a second step the close connection is employed between the Green function and the density matrix in a statistical equilibrium state. This yields an explicit and exact formula for the statistical mean values of all intensity‐like quantities which are bilinear in the angular momentum projections of the incident fields.
