Information seeking behaviour of users in astronomy information centres and libraries in India: a pilot study

Abstract

This study given an overview of proposed study of the information seeking behaviour (ISB) of users related to their research activities and evaluates users changing needs in an IT environment in Astronomy information centres and libraries (ICLs) in India. Objective of the study isto find out ISBof users of Astronomy and Astrophysics (A A) in India in digital era and recommend some solutions to improve the same using new tools. A stratified sample survey was used. Out of the 50 questionnaires, 35 were received and used their data for analysis for this pilot study. It shows that in AA users have developed a unique ISB to carry out their research, etc. Majority of respondents reported that there is more information available than they are able to find out. Descriptive statistics were employed and data presented in tables and graphs. It was found that respondents used a variety of information sources for teaching and research. Book and online databases were considered more important as formal sources of information and also found that e-mail and face to face communications have used extensibility by users' uses as informal source of information. This study also indicates that currently maximum users are aware and use IT for their research, etc. It is interesting to note that respondents perceived ICLs as effective place in meeting their information needs. Furthermore, the elaborate and in depth studies have been suggested with larger sample size and data based on this pilot study.
