Looking back and looking ahead

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss 3 main themes that provide an overview of adolescent health literacy and learning approaches as outlined by the authors in the preceding chapters. These themes are nurturing inquiry, engaging youth, and using bridging activities. We end with a discussion of 5 future trends, taking into consideration the complexity of adolescent worlds and the need for health educators and health systems to work harder to address adolescents as individuals and as a specific life-stage group. These trends are consideration of adolescent demography, growth of the importance of media and information technology, development of more relevant and responsive health education, adopting community-based approaches, and the creation of health-literatesystems and institutions.
