Abstract
This chapter examined three aspects of social identity as it relates to multiple group membership: 1) the role multiple groups play in social identity, 2) the structure of multiple group membership in social identity, and 3) the purpose of the outgroup in social identity. The authors’ insights provide a framework for understanding identification with multiple targets in an organizational context, as well as the dynamic relationship between social identity and social behavior.
