The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing

by Peter Mell, Tim Grance
National Institute of Standards and Technology (2009)

Abstract

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics, three service models, and four deployment models.

OS Virtualization - What is it?
4
Abstraction of the operating system from the physical
hardware it is running to a unified logical equivalent.
 Average data-center server
operates at < 5% utilization.
 Majority of servers facilitate
one service or function
 Vast majority of servers are
over provisioned or
provisioned for the theoretical
peak requirement

5
Fault Tolerant: continue running
uninterrupted despite hardware
failures.
High Availability: resume running
following a hardware failure with a
brief interruption defined by the
duration of detection and recovery.

Cloud Storage Consolidation
Definition
Improve the manageability and cost-effectiveness of data storage by rationalizing the
utilization of storage assets.
Opportunity in the Cloud

Tiered storage (performance, resilience, and cost)

“Unlimited” storage / configuration (provider capacity problem)
Objective

Maximize performance

Minimize cost (per Gig in use, per Gig backup)
Expectation

30-50% reduction in storage requirement
