Abstract

Wheel impact load detector is an integral part of a railway operator's maintenance strategy of the rail infrastructure. The level of defect in a wheel is inferred from the output from this monitoring system. The work presented of data to highlight some features of the data establishing trends in the deterioration of wheels. It was found that there is an interaction between the deterioration of wheels of a particular axle and wheels at the adjacent axle. The statistical characteristics of these events are discussed in this report. © Institute of Materials Engineering Australasia Ltd 2005.
