Abstract

A method is presented for the optimal layout of material in three-dimensional elastic structures subjected to multiple loads. The problem is solved using a moment formulation to characterize optimal anisotropy of the material at each point of the domain. The method has important practical applications, e.g., in design of cross sections of prismatic bars and in optimal design of laminates.
