Abstract
The past few years have seen the isolation and characterization of some of the genes involved in the control of limb pattern formation. Their possible role in this fundamental process is discussed in the light of recent data, and an attempt is made to superimpose this molecular approach to patterning on pre-existing conceptual views. © 1991 Current Biology Ltd.
