Phase transition induced by shearing of a sponge phase

Abstract

For the first time it has been shown that upon shearing of a sponge phase in a Couette cell a phase transition to a new highly birefringent phase with the same viscosity was induced. This transition is dependent upon the concentration of solvent, the length of time of shearing, and the history of the system.
