Abstract
Prophylactic mastectomy is a controversial operation. This chapter covers the indications for the procedure and aspects of the surgical technique. Data from animal studies and reports of breast cancer occurring after the operation are reviewed. The use of prophylactic mastectomy in the care of the genetically predisposed patient is discussed.
