Abstract

A review with 20 refs. Proteomics is an emerging field of research aimed at defining the status of every protein in a given cell. This includes the abundance, structural state and activity of each protein. Currently complex protein samples are analyzed by 2-D gel electrophoresis a method that is limited in both resoln. and sensitivity. Miniaturization and integration of different technol. platforms, such as microfluidics and detection, in the form of protein biochips, will advance proteomics as profoundly as DNA chips advanced genomics. Much effort is being focussed on the development of protein biochips and this article describes both conventional methods in proteomics as well as the new trends towards protein biochips.
