Abstract

The studies of visual attention have pointed out that human eyes generally focus on a few areas rather than scan the whole image. Local variance, which has been applied to image processing widely, could effectively reflect the local feature of the image. And high variance regions are more likely to attract visual attention. In this paper, we analyze and list some application examples of local variance in image fidelity assessment, give a modified weighting function and conclude the characteristics and future research about the role of local variance in image quality assessment. © 2010 IEEE.
