Abstract

Provided are definitions of "software engineering" and "software engineering tools". The relationships of software tools to the notions of "production function" and "capital goods" from economics are presented. A taxonomy of software tools is provided. The thrust of tools development toward enhanced levels of automation of the software process (its acronym is 'CASE', Computer Aided Software Engineering) is outlined and its relationship to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems is stated.
