Abstract
As the number of personal computers (PC) in business, industry, and government continues to increase, the need to organize and standardize the method for naming files becomes crucial. Mutual agreement on file names is important because there should be cooperation in the use of common assets, and standardization provides the capacity to easily access files, train new employees more quickly, and reduce redundancy. Disk directories have a potential for confusion when there are no subdirectories or file name standardizations. When using MS-DOS, the characteristics of the system must be considered, such as only 8 letters or numbers being available for a file name. Implementation should involve the same information techniques that traditionally have been used to manage information stored in filing cabinets. Although the process may be time consuming, the benefits will include a reduction in frustration and increased productivity.
