Abstract

The present paper has a threefold purpose: 1. (1) Summary of a number of more commonly used statistical techniques for geological data by means of a table with explanatory notes. 2. (2) Introduction to the theory of geological frequency distributions. 3. (3) Discussion of two case histories. There is a straight-line relationship between mean and standard deviation of groups of copper from layers of different composition in the ultramafic-gabbroic Muskox Intrusion (N.W. T., Canada). The copper values from the individual layers follow a three-parameter lognormal distribution. Trends in specific gravity data from the Mount Albert Peridotite Intrusion (Gaspé, Canada) are extrapolated outside the topographic surface by developing a three-dimensional cubic polynomial function. The present distribution of the topographic relief across the intrusion supports the assumption that the method may give useful results. © 1964.
