Abstract

Purpose: determine if width of attached gingiva varies by tooth, age, sex. What are the averages? Conclusions - consistent pattern of variation between patients, but the pattern of variation is consistent. Less than 1mm of attached gingiva can be normal and maintained with meticulous oral hygiene. Increase mean width of AG from decidious to adult dentition. Variations exist with tooth malposition. No difference from male to female. Maxilla width is greater than mandible width. Some width of attached gingiva is necessary for health.
