Mapping research evolution in higher education: a scientometric analysis of Brunei Darussalam (1986–2024)

Abstract

This study presents a scientometric analysis of Brunei Darussalam’s higher education research landscape from 1986 to 2024, focusing on thematic priorities, collaboration networks, and emerging trends. The study employed advanced scientometric analysis using Scopus as the primary data source, complemented by CiteSpace as an analytical tool for co-citation analysis, keyword mapping, and temporal visualizations to identify thematic clusters and emerging trends. The analysis highlights the significance of interdisciplinary research and international collaborations in enhancing the visibility and impact of Brunei’s academic contributions. The findings reveal Brunei's strategic focus on sustainability, with clusters emphasizing renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and carbon management. Collaborative networks, both regional and global, play a vital role in advancing the research ecosystem, with institutions like Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Teknologi Brunei serving as pivotal nodes. Challenges persist, particularly in achieving greater representation in international databases and high-impact journals, which are crucial for scaling research influence. Emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and nanotechnology are identified as transformative opportunities, offering innovative solutions to local and global challenges. These areas align with Brunei’s ambitions to diversify its research agenda and address complex societal issues. This study underscores the importance of aligning research outputs with national and global priorities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and leveraging international partnerships. By addressing these aspects, Brunei’s academic institutions can enhance their research impact, contribute to sustainable development, and strengthen their position in the global academic community.
