Abstract
For inertially confined plasmas, energy supplied in the surface layers of a pellet by laser light or short-range ions causes ablative implosion of the pellet and can result in satisfactory compressional heating. Here the topics reviewed are: pellet compression; application of inertial fusion to electric power production; laser drivers for inertial fusion; and particle-beam drivers for inertial fusion.
