Abstract

This chapter presents the recent evolution of urban management and planning in Bogotá, Colombia, conceived as part of a region-wide transformation of the city that has occurred in the last 15 years in order to promote sustainable urban development. This process implied profound changes in governance and civic culture, in financial arrangements and the strength of social cohesion, as well as an increase in the capacity of public planning. These elements, which are strongly related, produced positive results in Bogotá's urban dynamics and were vital in overcoming the crisis in which the city's development had been trapped since the 1980s.
