Abstract

Chem. investigation of anti-microbial and anti-fungal components of the leaves of Struchium sparganophora through the application of vacuum liq. chromatogtaphy (VLC), column liq. chromatog. (CLC) and preparative thin layer chromatog. (PTLC) resulted in isolation of a sesquiterpene lactone, vernodalinol. This compd. was subjected to anti-fungal and cytotoxic tests. It exhibited a significant antifungal properties (P>.05) at the concns. of 12.5 to 25 μg/mL and cytotoxic effects against melanoma and ovarian cancer cell lines at the concns. of 3-5 × 10-3 μg/mL; the structure of this compd. was detd. by spectroscopic methods. This compd. portend a useful chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of fungal and cancer infections. [on SciFinder(R)]
