Abstract

Ethical statements can sometimes serve as legitimate evidence for purely descriptive hypotheses. This role for ethical statements need involve neither wishful thinking, nor dogmatism. This is first shown using a simple example that employs thick moral concepts. A far more significant example with a similar structure is then given from within the sciences. It draws on two different committees’ deliberations about the impact of the hormonal pregnancy test Primodos.
