Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of women in the novel Jalan Lahir by Dias Novita Wuri using a sociology of literature approach. The focus of the study is the relationship between the representation of women and the social structure of Indonesian society, especially during the colonial period. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with literature review techniques (document studies), analyzing the novel as the main source and supported by relevant literature. The results of the study show that the novel Jalan Lahir authentically depicts the suffering, discrimination, and struggles of women in the colonial era, including the experience of becoming a jugun ianfu and the trauma of unwanted pregnancy. This representation reflects how women experience marginalization, sexual violence, and deep psychological burdens, while also showing their resilience and spiritual struggles. The conclusion of this study is that Jalan Lahir is not just a work of fiction, but a social mirror that reveals the complexity of power, gender injustice, and the legacy of trauma that continues to affect the next generation. This novel contributes to enriching the understanding of the social construction of women and criticism of patriarchal norms in Indonesian literature.
