Abstract

The aerial part of Paspalum repens was herein chemically and biologically assessed. The rosmarinic acid and a mix of the flavonoids quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and quercetin-3-O-β-D-(6-E-caffeoyl)) glucopyranoside were isolated through chemical investigation. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on their NMR (1D and 2D) data. The crude extract, hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions were evaluated for biological activity. The ethyl acetate fraction showed significant DPPH freeradical scavenging activity with CE50 18.88 ± 0.34 mg.mL-1, and total phenols EAT 110.79 mg.mL-1. The crude extract, hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fraction were inactive against the following microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The present study is the first one about the herein assessed aquatic plant.
