Abstract

One of the important abilities that students have when learning mathematics is the ability to understand mathematical concepts. The ability to understand mathematical concepts can help students understand mathematical concepts and can apply them in solving a mathematical problem. The ability to understand students' mathematical concepts can be influenced by one of the initial mathematical abilities of each student. This early mathematical ability can help students to relate the material that has been studied with the material to be studied. This type of research is descriptive qualitative descriptive qualitative which aims to analyze and describe how the ability to understand concepts in terms of students' initial mathematical abilities and how to optimize the ability to understand concepts. The subjects of this study were students of class IX LKP Mutiara Hitung-Jayanti. The procedures used in this study include the preparation stage, implementation stage, data analysis stage, and preparation stage. Based on the results of the study 1) Students with high initial abilities overall have very good conceptual understanding skills in almost all indicators, 2) students with moderate initial abilities overall have good conceptual understanding skills except in the indicators of presenting concepts in mathematical representations, applying concepts or algorithms in problem solving are still lacking, and 3) students with low initial abilities have the ability to understand concepts that are still lacking in indicators of providing examples and not examples of a concept, presenting concepts in mathematical representations, and applying concepts or algorithms in problem solving. From all levels of initial ability, students are still weak in indicators of restating a concept.
