Abstract
Fishery typology and historic of fishing activities in Lake Faé have been described in September 1996 according to the Participative survey project AISA/IDESSA. Fishery in this reservoir is artisanal and of individual type. Started in 1980 with the implantation of foreign fishermen from Mali, this activity has been practiced by two types of actors: the professional (foreigners) and the occasional ones (Bakwés). The fishing gears are those classically used in the continental fisheries of Ivory Coast: mono and multifilaments gillnets, casnets (fenced, in nets or in bamboo), China bamboos traps. The artisanal fishermen density on Lake Faé is about 6.4 fishermen/km2, therefore three times higher than the optimal adviced value (2 fishermen/km2). Consequently, management measures should be taken by the Fisheries Department to control the migratory pattern of the fishermen toward this reservoir, in order to decrease the observed density. Its maintaining or increasing could generate a quick overexploitation of the stocks, and may represent a potential source of conflicts between foreigners and autochthonous. According to that, recommendations for a sustainable fishery on this reservoir are proposed.
