Abstract

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) defines attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as “a persistent pattern of inattention and=or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.'' Therefore, it is a developmental disorder of inattention and=or hyperactivity-impulsivity, meaning children with the disorder may have difficulty filtering external stimuli, inhibiting motor impulses, anticipating events, and adjusting behavior based on feedback about misconduct.
