Abstract

The innovation capacity of a country contributes to improve its competitive position, so the objective of this research is to analyze the innovation capacity in Mexico and its global ranking. In the methodology, a multivariate analysis of cluster analysis was performed to classify 109 countries according to the Global Competitiveness Index; subsequently, through multiple linear regression analysis, a statistical model of the functional relationship of Mexico with respect to the innovation capacity construct was designed. The results derive in a significant contribution because a mapping of the economies is made by classifying them into five clusters and for the case of Mexico a model of innovation capacity is obtained, explained by five variables: population using the Internet, scientific and technical articles, patents, research and development expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product and researchers. In conclusion, this article provides a comparative overview of the performance of the countries evaluated, as well as modeling Mexico’s innovation capacity. These findings represent a diagnostic for the design or improvement of public policies that foster innovation and competitiveness.
