Abstract

This work investigates Automatic Generation Control in the one area thermal power system and optimization of gain parameters of conventional controller for non-reheat and reheat thermal power systems. Proportional - integral - derivative (PID) controller and PI controller is used for the comparison. The tuning of controller gain parameters is obtained by Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) approach for optimization. The proposed work utilizes new meta-heuristic algorithm for tuning of controller gain parameters. The GNA algorithm proved to be effective and robust for tuning a controller in the presence and absence of appropriate Generation Rate Constraint (GRC). The performance comparison and verification of simulation results is shown in time domain using Matlab. Finally, simulation result reveals that new GNA tuned PID controller provides more superior response in comparison to PI controller with and without including the effect of GRC.
