Abstract
Abstract. The concept of the foraminiferal toothplate and the way in which this has changed through time is laid out. Historical developments are contrasted with more recent information. Ultrastructure and lamellarity are used to define and differentiate the toothplate from other internal anatomical elements. The function of the toothplate in the test remains an enigma.
