Abstract

An experimental study on laser transmission welding of transparent glass and aluminum alloy by a millisecond pulsed laser is reported for the purpose of hermetically sealing glass to metal. Prior to the laser sealing process, an oxide coating is prepared on the aluminum alloy surfaces using the micro-arc-oxidation process. The effect of laser processing parameters on the shear force, weld seam morphology, and weld joint interface is investigated, and the formation mechanism of the weld seam is analyzed. The results show that the micro-arc-oxidation coating can effectively act as a laser energy absorbing layer and buffer layer of weldments. In addition, the main reason for realizing the connection between these two materials lies in the mixed mosaic structure formed within welds. When the laser power is 100 W, laser pulse width 2.5 ms, welding speed 3 mm/s, and laser frequency 10 Hz, the weldments can obtain good sealing.
