Abstract

In the early colonies, people took wildling strawberries and planted them in gardens. True cultivation began after 1800. Many varieties of strawberry grown in North America during 1800-1900 were from pure Fragaria virginiana, the Scarlet being one of the major varieities. Some later varieties had unclear lineages, but appear to be from(at least in part) F. virginiana as well.
